About this calculator
Type a number, choose the unit you have and the unit you want, and this converter gives you the answer at once, along with the same data size and storage in every other unit it knows.
Every conversion factor is exact by definition wherever one exists, and each result shows the working so you can check it.

How to convert by hand
There are two systems. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) go up by 1,000 each step and are used by drive makers and network speeds. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) go up by 1,024 each step and are what operating systems often show.
A byte is 8 bits. Multiply by the size of the unit you have (in bytes), then divide by the size of the unit you want.
Conversion factors used
Each unit is stored as its size in bytes. The sizes below are the ones this converter uses.
| Unit | Size |
|---|---|
| bytes (B) | 1 bytes |
| kilobytes (KB, 1,000 B) | 1,000 bytes |
| megabytes (MB) | 1,000,000 bytes |
| gigabytes (GB) | 1,000,000,000 bytes |
| terabytes (TB) | 1,000,000,000,000 bytes |
| kibibytes (KiB, 1,024 B) | 1,024 bytes |
| mebibytes (MiB) | 1,048,576 bytes |
| gibibytes (GiB) | 1,073,741,824 bytes |
| tebibytes (TiB) | 1,099,511,627,780 bytes |
| bits | 0.125 bytes |
Common conversions

Why a 1 TB drive shows less space
A drive sold as 1 TB holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. An operating system that counts in binary units reports that as about 931 GiB, which looks like missing space but is only two different definitions of “gigabyte”.
Frequently asked questions
How many MB are in a GB?
1 GB is 1,000 MB in the decimal system, and 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB in the binary system.
Why does my 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
The drive is 10¹² bytes; the computer divides by 2³⁰ and shows about 931 GiB.
How many bits are in a byte?
Eight bits make one byte.
How accurate is this converter?
It uses the exact defined factors wherever they exist and shows up to 12 significant digits, so the results are accurate to far more digits than you will normally need.
